Chemistry is full of fun and actions at NYP. As part of the National Chemistry Week events, SCL(LS) organised a Chemistry exhibit entitled “Chemistry-in-Action@NYP” on 3 Jun 09. The aim of this exhibit is to highlight the importance and applications of Chemistry in the 21st century. A total of 88 participants from 5 schools and public took part in this event. The activities lined up include Chemical Tornado, Nylon Making, Rainbow Column and Chemiluminescence.
Have you ever wondered what compounds are in the common pain killers such as Panadol, Panadol Extra, Aspirin and Nurofen? On 10 Jun 09, a total of 34 students and 2 teachers from 9 secondary schools got an opportunity to analyse these medicines at the “DrugTrail@NYP” workshop. This is a Medicinal Chemistry workshop organised by SCL(LS) as part of the National Chemistry Week activities. The aim of this workshop is to showcase the concept and application of thin layer chromatography (TLC) in drug analysis. Through this activity, the participants learnt how to use TLC to identify the active ingredients in these common pain killers.

This eight-day workshop, co-sponsored by Singapore under the Singapore Cooperation Programme (SCP) and organized under the aegis of the Singapore-WHO Joint Training Programme, recognizes the importance of human resource capacity building to equip Asia Pacific countries with the skills to implement more effective integrated national dengue control programmes.
The workshop provided program managers, laboratory personnel and other key program staff with important tools to be able to address dengue outbreak preparedness more effectively. It also provided attendants with a useful platform to share knowledge and experience on dengue surveillance and vector control. The workshop addressed programmatic gaps to strengthen dengue laboratory and vector surveillance in the region, so as to better pre-empt and respond to dengue epidemics. It also emphasized the need for a good surveillance systemduring inter-epidemic periods. The latter is crucial in efforts by countries to lessen or avert any impending outbreaks during peak dengue seasons.
During the workshop which was conducted at the laboratories of Nanyang Polytechnic’s School of Chemical & Life Science (Life Sciences), NEA shared Singapore’s experiences in dengue control, building upon the country’s in-depth understanding of the vector, the disease and its transmission dynamics, all key factors in ensuring an evidence based approach behind our operations.
Some 42 participants from 29 countries in the Western Pacific and South East Asia regions attended the workshop, which comprised of two parallel sessions – Laboratory Surveillance and Field Surveillance & Control. The sessions encompass lectures, site visits, laboratory practicals, and hands-on field experience.
The School of Chemical and Life Sciences (SCL) conducted a “Little Scientist Workshop” at IKEA Alexandra for the children of IKEA’s Friends members on the 6th of December, 2008. SCL is hoping to use these activities to get very young children interested in the fundamental topics underlying the biology of human.
The workshop “Science-in-Action@NYP” was conducted from 9am-1pm on 19 Sep 2008. This workshop is based on the theme of Science.08 “The Science of Speed”, and concepts of ultracentrifugation and its applications were introduced to Sec3-4 students. 28 students from 5 schools (Nanyang Girls’ High, Dunman High, Crescent High, Damai Sec, Riverside Sec) turned up for this event. The students enjoyed the activities and learnt something new from this workshop.
