Jess & LiewXi’s Birthday celebration!

Blog Post by FS0903

HELLO! This is our blog entry for July! We are going to share about Jess and Liew Xi’s birthday celebration. Jess’s birthday falls on the 15th of July and Liew Xi’s birthday falls on the 17th of July. So, our class decided to give them a birthday surprise on the 16th of July. We sat down as a class to discuss about how we should let this surprise be carry out. Thankfully, there were ideas given from our classmates.

Being playful, we decided to play a prank on the 2 birthday girls by telling them that there will be an inorganic chemistry test for those who did not do well for the common test. The best part was that they really took our words for it and they really did study! So our plan is to trick the girls of course, the fake test was only part of it. Hence, most of our classmates meet outside P712 as per normal while the rest of them get everything ready at N605. Again, we prank on them that we had changed the venue to N605. When the 2 birthday girls opened the door, everyone shouted ‘Happy Birthday’. So we started singing birthday song using English, Chinese and Malay version. Next, they made wishes and cut the cake.

Overall, it all went smoothly as everything was according to our plans. Special thanks to those who had helped out with this celebration and make it a successful one. So to end off, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Liew Xi and Jess!

Dodge Ball Competition

29 07 2009

Blog Post by FS0802

On the 25th of July, a dodge ball competition was held, as mentioned by Mr Stewart Tan.

Our class, FS0802 took part in it, and we played in 3 preliminary rounds and one of the round was against MB0804, one of the strongest teams. We lost to MB0804 but we advanced to the knock-out rounds where we faced 15 other teams. When we made it to the Semi-Finals, we were facing the MB0804 team again. We played 3 gruelling games with them, 1st game we lost, however, we took out some of their players, and the remaining 3 or 4 players took us all out. The 2nd game, we switched sides and this time, we played the defensive strategy, however, we did not manage to dodge their altogether-combined attacks and we lost yet again. In the third round, we went all out, and took out some of their best players, but our tactics were no match for their vigor and violence. So we lost to them in the Semi-Finals. We faced FS0803 in a very friendly match for the third place. At that point of time, our class was much less offensive as 02’s and 03’s were in close terms off the pitch. The slow and friendly game ended with FS0803 in the third place and FS0802 in the 4th place.

Teacher Work Attachment @ SCL (Jun 2009)

15 07 2009

Blog Post by Tai Lee Kian, staff

Teacher Work Attachment (TWA) is an annual event SCL(LS) organizes for teachers from primary and secondary school. This is organized to expose the teachers to the current update in life sciences and to enrich their teaching experiences. This year TWA was held from 15th to 19th June 2009. 26 teachers had joined this 5-days attachment. SCL(LS) had aligned these 5 days with various interesting activities found across the three diplomas offered by SCL(LS). On the first and second day, the teachers had immersed themselves with exciting molecular biology activities such as DNA extraction from strawberry, microscopy of the cell types as well as learning about the organelles and genetics. On the third day, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) giant, Eu Yan Sang, had kindly hosted the teachers. A visit to Eu Yan Sang and a talk on TCM had been organized during the visit. The teachers had been exposed to our food science program on the fourth day where they were involved in making their own drinks and performing sensory evaluation on the drinks. On the last day of the attachment, the teachers had a chance to learn on many useful pharmaceutical topics such as the dosage of the drugs and the storage of the drugs. They were also tested on their blood glucose level. All the teachers participated actively in these 5-days attachment where they described this attachment as fulfilling and enriching.

Have you ever wondered what compounds are in the common pain killers such as Panadol, Panadol Extra, Aspirin and Nurofen? On 10 Jun 09, a total of 34 students and 2 teachers from 9 secondary schools got an opportunity to analyse these medicines at the “DrugTrail@NYP” workshop. This is a Medicinal Chemistry workshop organised by SCL(LS) as part of the National Chemistry Week activities. The aim of this workshop is to showcase the concept and application of thin layer chromatography (TLC) in drug analysis. Through this activity, the participants learnt how to use TLC to identify the active ingredients in these common pain killers.
