My Sister’s Wedding
18 06 2009Blog post by Benjamin Cheah, MB0703
Well pretty much like a formal class dinner, although unfortunately not all of our class member was there, but it’s more or less the whole class. Just weeks back, i invited a few of my fellow mb0703 classmates to my sister wedding which held in “M-hotel”. Despite the fact the it’s a wedding dinner for my sister, but i kinda treated it as a formal class dinner as i can see them having fun and enjoying the food.
Speaking of food, i recalled a funny incident that happened during the dinner. Just before the first course is about to be served, Rafida and Dayana asked me a question that i think it was too late to answer. And the question is whether the food is halal certified or not? Funny wasn’t it? Imagine going all the way to M-hotel, all dressed up and stylish, but just gotta sit there the whole night surviving by drinking chinese tea!!! Well fortunately, the food were all halal certified, and of course they did enjoy.
We managed to take a couples of photos that night, but don’t try to spot me, i always shun photo taking.

Holiday
15 06 2009Blog post by Khairul, PS0701
The school holidays have just ended and I begin to recap on what I did for the long school break. I spend most of my time being proactive mostly filling up my schedule with the things I usually do not have time to do during the school days. The activities range from swimming to working round the clock. Trying to maximize my time during the long break, I tried to juggle 2 jobs at once. However it did not turn out well. I was very tired once I ended my shift. With the objective of trying to earn as much money as possible during the short time frame, I persevered thorough the fatigue. At times like this, do I really realize how an easy life students lead compared to the working adults. One of the things I also did was to spring clean. As my room was messier than a pig sty, my mum ordered me to clean the room. Considering that a lot of the junk lying around the room belonged to my siblings, I immediately told them to clean up their mess. Once the room was cleared and the new furniture went into the room, it looked abit tidier. Trying to prove my point that the mess did not originate from my untidiness, I took a picture of my stuff separated from the junk lying around.

Needless to say the one in the neat stacked boxes was my stuff compared to my sibling’s junk pile.
During my journey to work, I saw something out of the ordinary. I saw 4 dustbins being put in the same area. I found it rather pointless putting more than one garbage bin in the same spot. Needless to say that four dustbins was rather redundant and unnecessary. While pondering on the sight, I actually saw a boy who stood in the middle of all four dustbins and thinking carefully which bin should he discard his rubbish in. I must say it was an amusing sight.

MB0801 BBQ Class Outing
15 06 2009Blog Post by Hayden Yeo Hui Yu, MB0801
Our first class Barbeque at East Coast Park on was a blast. Everyone did enjoy themselves and had so much fun talking, eating, and playing on the beach.
Our class mentor was sick and could not join us for the BBQ, with the rest of our classmates. We started the BBQ at about 5pm, with a few of the classmates starting the fire and buying refreshments. Finally, the pit is ready and we are off to cook the food.
We had a variety of food to choose from, chicken wings, sausages, sweet corn, satay and otah. Most importantly, we had our all time favorite, Marshmallow with chocolate sauce. With some of the girls in charge of cooking, the rest were in charge of eating.
The best thing about BBQ at East Coast Park is that, you can enjoy sea breeze while eating your favorite food. I must say that Heaven was on our side, the weather was great!

Movie of the Month – Night At The Museum 2
11 06 2009Night at the Museum 2 : Battle of the Smithsonian
Blog contributed and post by Norbert Ha 075302H MB0702
Have you ever watched the American adventure comedy film – Night At The Museum in the year 2006? Night At The Museum 2 is coming back this year!
Once again, our hero is Larry Daley (Ben Stiller), a former museum night guard who has gone on to become a rich and successful businessman, owning a company that sells devices like those glow-in-the-dark torches in infomercials. When Larry pops into New York’s Museum of Natural History, he discovers that his old exhibition buddies from the first film — Teddy Roosevelt (Robin Williams), the miniature cowboy Jedediah (Owen Wilson), Octavius (Steve Coogan) — are being packed up and sent off to the Smithsonian Institute for storage.
Later, Larry gets a distressed call from Jedediah and heads off to the Smithsonian, in Washington DC, to find out what’s going on. He discovers that the Egyptian ruler Kahmunrah (Hank Azaria), with the assistance of Ivan the Terrible (Christopher Guest), Al Capone (Jon Bernthal) and Napoleon Bonaparte (Alain Chabat), plans to unleash his Army of the Underworld and conquer the world! It’s up to Larry and his new sidekick — and romantic interest — Amelia Earhart (Amy Adams), to stop them.
The below is the trailer for Night At The Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian. The movie is now on in cinema! My friends and I ranked the movie 4 stars out of 5. It’s worth to watch!

Teaching Internship Program (March – April ‘09)
11 06 2009Blog Post by Cher Lihui FS0701
During the march holidays, four of my classmates and I were selected to join a Teaching Internship Program (TIP). This program, which was somewhat like an attachment, aims to give interested students an insight on teaching as a career. Besides us, other food science students from TP and SP were also involved in the TIP.
During the month-long program, we were provided with two days of intensive training first, before we were paired off and sent to our designated secondary schools. My allocated partner was from SP, and we were both really lucky as the school we were attached to is right next to our residence!
During the four weeks of attachment, we observed plenty of home economics lessons, a handful of mathematics and chemistry lessons, and even have the chance to conduct several theory and practical lessons! Not only did we learn how to be a teacher, we even muster plenty of difficult dishes such as the gong bao ji ding (Chicken in the palace or palace chicken??) shown below. It may not look very appetizing there (I blame the lighting!), but it is really yummy!
We also came across this cute little kitten, just a few days old, that was abandoned outside the home economics room. Ok, the fluffy bear and the flower wasn’t there when we found him. Our supervisor promptly adopt him, and gave him that bear, and we gave him that flower as a farewell present.
Well, back to the TIP, it was a very fruitful holiday. Not only do we gain plenty of invaluable experience, we even earn some allowance
I will definitely recommend this TIP!

Little Scientist Workshop @ NYP – Learn about Your Body
10 06 2009Blog Post by Daniel Tan and Wilson Wong
In the early morning of 6th June 2009, all of us were busy with our final preparations for the workshop which will begin in one hour. Many of us were making sure that the items distributed on the tables were sufficient for the experiments that our guest will be doing later. Some of us were getting ready to meet the kids, interestingly the room they were situated are well decorated with the theme of a childcare centre which is a contrast to the gloomy classroom.
Our guest arrives in waves, slowly parents started turning up with one of their child. Some were quite surprise when, we told them that the parents have to be separated from their child temporary as they will be taking part in a separate activity. The parents will be learning about the interesting background of the DNA and the DNA extraction experiment that they will be teaching to their child in the next half of the workshop. Their child will be learning and playing with the models dedicated to teach them about the organs found in the human body under the guidance of our students.
As the parents listen to us presenting the topic about DNA, some were a bit anxious about understanding the topic, some fear that the science was too complex for them. In the end, all of them were satisfied with their better understanding of the DNA, some even ask interesting questions that brought out important themes such as cancer a disease that is strongly related to DNA damage. They certainly enjoyed the little experiment, that was put up for them, many of them fiddled with the apparatus that they rarely see in their daily lives and they follow our instructions with great enthusiasm. It was enjoyable for them to extract DNA out of kiwi, a fruit that they usually eat at home.
The children too had great fun playing with the models and coloring the organs on paper which can be cut and collected. However, they did not know that the real fun is about start.
After a break, the children were brought back this time with their parents into the rooms again, this time the parents will have to teach their child the DNA extraction experiment that they had just learned. It was a great success, all the parents enjoyed spending time with their kids, playing with the apparatus and working on the strawberry which is the fruit that they will be extracting the DNA from. Some even requested for more strawberries to work on.
After a period of scientific fun between the parents and their child, the workshop come to an end. As we were clearing up the mess they left, the kids receive goodies that we have prepared for them as a parting gift. All of the parents and their children left satisfied with the morning that they had spend here with us. Some even left with positive feedbacks, encouraging us to set up more of such programs to enhance the interest of science in children of that age.
As for the group that help to set up the workshop, we all left knowing that there are more people out there who knows the amazing nature of the DNA, hopefully they will be scientists one day.

MB0801 class outing
9 06 2009Blog Post by Tham Hui Wan (MB0801)
MB0801 had our class outing catering buffet at our mentor, Richards Mark’s condominium! We met in school and made our way there by walking to his condo. It was very fun as we chatted happily along the way. When we reached outside of our mentor’s condo, he came out and fetched us in. He brought us into a function room which he had booked. There was a variety of good food to choose from, including mee siam, raisin baked rice, sushi and much more! This gathering gave us the opportunity to know each other better, and had a good time interacting with our mentor, strengthening our bonds. Personally, I enjoyed myself very much in this outing. Hope everyone enjoy too!
Here are a few photos to share.

Delicious food!
